Connecting Drobo to Your Mac

After adding hard drives, connect your Drobo device to your Mac or connect Drobo (1rst and 2nd generation only) to DroboShare.

To Connect DroboPro to Your Mac:

  1. You can connect DroboPro using iSCSI (Ethernet port), FireWire 800, or USB 2.0. You can connect only one interface at a time:
    1. iSCSI: Connect one end of the supplied Ethernet cable to the iSCSI port on the back of your DroboPro. Next, connect the other end to an available network port on your Mac.
    2. FireWire 800: Connect one end of the supplied FireWire 800 cable to one of the FireWire 800 ports on the back of your DroboPro. Next, connect the other end to an available FireWire 800 port on your Mac.
    3. USB 2.0: Connect the square end of the supplied USB 2.0 cable to the USB 2.0 port on the back of your DroboPro. Next, connect the other end of the USB 2.0 cable to an available USB 2.0 port on your Mac.
  2. Plug the supplied power cord into the power connector on the back of your DroboPro.
  3. Plug the power cord into a standard power outlet or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed for electronics.
  4. DroboPro has a power switch in the rear on the left side. Toggle the power switch to start the power-up sequence. During this time, the data bay indicators will turn yellow and all 10 blue lights will be displayed on the capacity gauge.
  5. As the hard drives come online, the data bay indicators will turn green.

You are now ready to format your drives.

Note: For advanced configurations connecting DroboPro to a switch or router, please see the iSCSI help topic or How do I set up an iSCSI connection on my DroboPro? in our website Knowledge Base.

To Connect 1st and 2nd Generation Drobo or Drobo S to Your Mac:

  1. You can connect Drobo using either FireWire 800 (Drobo S or 2nd Generation Drobo) or USB 2.0:
    1. FireWire 800: Connect one end of the supplied FireWire 800 cable to one of the FireWire 800 ports on the back of your Drobo. Next, connect the other end to an available FireWire 800 port on your Mac.
    2. USB 2.0: Connect the square end of the supplied USB 2.0 cable to the USB 2.0 port on the back of your Drobo. Next, connect the other end of the USB 2.0 cable to an available USB 2.0 port on your Mac.
    3. eSATA (Drobo S only): Connect one end of the supplied eSATA cable to the back of your Drobo S. Next, connect the other end to an available eSATA port on your Mac.
  2. Plug the supplied AC power adaptor into the power port on the back of your Drobo.
  3. Plug the power cord into a standard power outlet or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed for electronics.
  4. If you have a Drobo S, toggle the power switch on the back. 1st and 2nd Generation Drobos do not have a power switch, so this will start the power-up sequence. During this time, the data bay indicators will turn red and all 10 blue lights will be displayed on the capacity gauge.
  5. As the hard drives come online, the data bay indicators will turn green.

You are now ready to format your drives.

To Connect DroboElite to Your Mac:

  1. You can connect DroboElite directly to your Mac using either of the iSCSI (Ethernet) ports or the USB 2.0 port. You can connect only one interface at a time:
    1. iSCSI: Connect one end of the supplied Ethernet cable to the iSCSI port on the back of your DroboElite. Next, connect the other end to an available network port on your PC.
    2. USB 2.0: Connect the square end of the supplied USB 2.0 cable to the USB 2.0 port on the back of your DroboPro. Next, connect the other end of the USB 2.0 cable to an available USB 2.0 port on your PC.
  2. Plug the supplied power cord into the power connector on the back of your DroboElite.
  3. Plug the power cord into a standard power outlet or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed for electronics.
  4. DroboElite has a power switch in the rear on the left side (when reaching from the front). Toggle the power switch to start the power-up sequence. During this time, the data bay indicators will turn yellow and all 10 blue lights will be displayed on the capacity gauge.
  5. As the hard drives come online, the data bay indicators will turn green.
  6. If you have connected your DroboElite using the USB connector, safely shut down the unit, disconnect the USB cable, then connect the iSCSI cable to DroboElite and your PC and power the unit on.

You are now ready to format your drives.
